Nerve Supplements for Neuropathy: What Studies Report and Do Not
Nerve supplements for neuropathy are sold next to a diagnosis that clinicians sort out by cause. Reviews of single ingredients are mixed or low in certainty, and none tested Flow Nerves. Flow Nerves is a capsule supplement with six named ingredients and no printed amounts. It is not a medicine for neuropathy.

What are nerve supplements for neuropathy, and what is neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is a name for many conditions in which nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are damaged. Nerve supplements for neuropathy are products sold alongside that diagnosis, and no supplement is approved to treat it.
Sources list many causes, with diabetes the leading one (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). Others include thyroid and kidney disease, alcohol, some medicines and low vitamin levels (MedlinePlus, Peripheral neuropathy). Because the cause decides the care, a clinician usually orders blood tests first. A nerve supplement neuropathy page that skips this step is selling a guess.
What do studies of neuropathy supplements report?
The only supplement page on diabetic neuropathy that we hold is from Mayo Clinic, and it is cautious (Mayo Clinic, Diabetic neuropathy: Can dietary supplements help?). A few reviews exist for single ingredients, and they do not agree with one another.
| Ingredient studied | Review | What it reported |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha-lipoic acid | Cochrane, 2024 | Probably little or no effect on the symptom score at six months, moderate certainty |
| Alpha-lipoic acid | Nutrients, 2023 | More favorable symptom scores, with no difference in some other measures |
| Acetyl-L-carnitine | Cochrane, 2019 | Pain finding of very low certainty |
| Vitamin B | Cochrane, 2008 | Evidence insufficient |
The two alpha-lipoic acid reviews differ in design. The Cochrane review counted only trials of six months or more, at 600 to 1,800 mg a day in people with diabetic neuropathy (Cochrane review, Alpha-lipoic acid for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (2024)). The 2023 meta-analysis included shorter trials (Nutrients 2023 meta-analysis, Oral alpha-lipoic acid and diabetic polyneuropathy). The carnitine review covered acetyl-L-carnitine, a different form from plain L-carnitine (Cochrane review, Acetyl-L-carnitine for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (2019)), and the vitamin B review is from 2008. No study tested Flow Nerves.
What can and cannot be said about neuropathy supplementation?
Can be said
- Some ingredients have been studied in people with diabetic neuropathy, and results are mixed.
- Cautions with medicines are sourced for several ingredients.
- A clinician looks for a cause first.
Cannot be said
- That a product is a treatment for neuropathy.
- That a blend works because one ingredient was studied alone.
- That an amount is right when no amount is printed.
Neuropathy supplementation also carries cautions. Alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, so people on diabetes medicine should talk to a provider (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Alpha-Lipoic Acid). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a pharmacist before adding anything.
